The 5 Most Common #Outbound Calling Mistakes | #b2bsales

?A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.? ?John C. Maxwell

Sales reps aren?t immune to mistakes. Learn about the five most common mistakes sales reps make on outbound calls, and prepare yourself to avoid them.

  1. Not Having a Script ? A well-written script is the foundation of a winning sale. If you go into a call with no agenda, you?ll come out of it with no progress. A script allows you to guide the conversation with a prospect. You can find out exactly what you want to know in minimal time, and won?t get caught off track on discussing marginal details.
  2. Sounding Scripted ? A good script doesn?t come across as a sales rep reading from a sheet of paper. You can?t predict exactly what your prospect will say, so use your script as a guide rather than a bible. We use fewer inflexions in our voices when we read than we do when we speak, so an overly scripted sales call can quickly bore the other person on the line. Practice your script enough so that you know the flow of the conversation you?d like to have, but not so often that you memorize it verbatim.
  3. Failing to Convey Confidence ? If you don?t believe in your products or services, why would your prospects? Demonstrate your confidence in your offering and in yourself, and your prospects are more likely to trust you than they are to trust someone who appears shifty and skittish. A few minor changes in your behavior could make a big impact on your overall confidence: try to keep a positive attitude, tighten your posture, adopt high power body language, and make exercising a habit.
  4. Contacting the Wrong Person ? We loath when our mistakes end up wasting our time. If your sales contact is not the primary decision maker, find out who is, and how you can get in touch with them. Use sales intelligence to find key decision makers at target organizations, and save your sales pitch for the right person.
  5. Forgetting the Product ? We can?t predict which questions prospects will ask, but we still need to be prepared to answer them. If you tell a prospect something that is not true about your product during an initial conversation, it will come back to haunt you later in the deal. The outbound caller must know absolutely everything there is to know about the product or service they pitch.?

South African police unit prosecuted for fighting violence with thuggery

The elite South African police unit operating in Durban had previously won praise for its high arrest and conviction rates of dangerous criminals.

An elite South African police unit that has previously won praise for its high arrest and conviction rates of dangerous criminals is facing prosecution over accusations it was operating a death squad that executed suspects with impunity.

The Durban Violent and Organised Crime Unit, or Cato Manor police, as it is also known, is famous in the eastern seaside city for its high-speed car chases, energetic shootouts, and seemingly fearless operatives.

In a country like South Africa, whose violent crime rates continue to be among the highest in the world despite some gains in recent years, their tough stance was encouraged by politicians and police chiefs. They have spoken of a ?shoot to kill? policy and encouraged officers threatened by gun-toting criminals to ?take them to the nearest mortuary.?

But when photographs emerged of the Cato Manor police waving their pistols and appearing to celebrate their ?kills? with barbecues and beers ??scenes that echoed the actions of the apartheid security forces who executed political rivals ??there was a public outcry. Following on the heels of the shooting by police of 34 striking miners in the country?s platinum belt in August, the incidents have raised new questions about how far law enforcement should go to keep the peace ? and whether excessive force stems violent crime.

A troubling pattern

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IDIP) examined each of the 45 shootings of criminal suspects by the Cato Manor unit in the past three years. Although the officers involved had been exonerated by inquests on each occasion, IPID said that when it looked at them together, a pattern emerged.

?Firearms that shooting victims had allegedly threatened or shot at police with never worked, had never been fired, or didn?t match the ammunition found with them,? says Moses Dlamini, IPID?s spokesman. ?Some of the people killed were never police suspects in the first place.??

IPID says that the unit executed suspects in cold blood, then planted guns, doctored crime scenes, and intimidated witnesses to cover up what they had done.

Thirty officers have been suspended from duty and are due before a court next week to face 116 charges, including 18 of murder and others of defeating the ends of justice, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and theft from the shooting victims.

Among the alleged murder victims was 16-year-old Kwazi Ndlovu, who was shot dead by armed police in April 2010 as he dozed in front of the television in his parents' living room.

His mother, Lindiwe, an accountant, said police told them they had been looking for an escaped convict and that Kwazi had threatened them with a gun.

?When we came out of our room the gun was already in his hand,? she said. ?It was so big ? he would never have been able to handle a gun like that, he was just a boy.?He wanted to be a doctor.?

Today, the family home is heavily fortified with electric fences and metal bars across the windows and doors: ?It?s for the police, not the criminals,? Mrs. Ndlovu explains. ?We?re always afraid they?ll come back.?

Other extrajudicial killings the unit allegedly carried out include one of a taxi firm owner gunned down in a car chase after he took out a court restraining order to prevent them from killing him. Another was of an armed robbery suspect who hid in a rubbish bin after seeing his friend shot dead by the same unit.

'We live in a violent society'

The unit?s overall commander, Major-General Johan Booysen, who oversees serious crime policing in Durban?s KwaZulu Natal Province, also faces prosecution on the grounds that he ought to have known about their activities and stopped them.

He insists that the high death rates were inevitable given the unit?s line of work. ?We live in a violent society and the Cato Manor unit was dealing with hardened criminals,? he says.?

He conceded that there were ?gray areas? in some of the fatal shootings, but pointed to the high numbers of police officers killed in the line of duty.

?It?s easy for us, who were not there, to debate whether an officer fired too quick or too slow. Hindsight is 20/10 but a lot of people are in their graves now because they were too cautious,? he said.?

The Cato Manor unit has a large group of supporters, who claim that without them, violent criminals in Durban will be given a free pass.

Better ways to police

The case has also sparked intense debate in South Africa about how tough its citizens want their police to be. Johan Burger, from the Institute for Security Studies, said there was no evidence that the use of excessive force by police brought down violent crime.

?Police have cut robbery rates by infiltrating crime syndicates and through more visible policing,? he says. ?You could argue that if police resort to vigilante activity, it will just harden the attitudes of criminals.?

He said the law on the use of lethal force in South Africa was clear ? but that politicians muddied the waters with tough-talk.

?That is dangerous because police officers might believe their conduct will be tolerated or protected because of the seriousness of violent crime in South Africa and the impatience of their political masters about the situation,? he said.

S&P cuts S.Africa, cites strikes, social tensions

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Standard & Poor's cut South Africa's credit rating one notch on Friday to BBB with a negative outlook, saying mining strikes and social tensions could reduce fiscal flexibility and hurt growth in the continent's biggest economy.

The Treasury hit back, saying its spending plans were "realistic and achievable" and that there was no historical evidence from the 18 years since the end of apartheid to support S&P's assertions.

"Our young democracy has seen several elections within the ruling party and government. None of these have impacted policy and budgeting in the manner that S&P suggests," it said in a statement.

"Government will continue to invest in infrastructure with the view of enhancing the productive capacity of our economy and the competitiveness of our industries. This will be done in a manner consistent with fiscal sustainability."

The rand, which fell to a 3-1/2 year low on Monday amid concerns about the impact to growth of mining and trucker strikes, shed nearly one percent against the dollar after the S&P cut.

It was trading at 8.75 at 1737 GMT, from 8.65 just before the announcement.

S&P's downgrade from BBB-plus takes it one notch below both Moody's Investors Service's Baa1 rating with a negative outlook as well as Fitch Ratings' BBB-plus rating, also with a negative outlook.

"The negative outlook reflects our view that the medium-term political, economic and fiscal ramifications of South Africa's social tensions could deteriorate beyond our current expectations," S&P said.

"We expect underlying social tensions may result in amplified spending pressures and reduce fiscal flexibility for the government."

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan will present his interim budget to parliament on October 25.

In particular, S&P said mining strikes could influence political debate ahead of 2014 elections and "may increase uncertainties related to the African National Congress' (ANC) future policy framework."

Before the 2014 election, the ruling ANC has to negotiate a potentially divisive internal leadership election in December

S&P added that it sees South African growth softening to around 2.5 percent in 2012 and the budget deficit increasing to at least 5.1 percent of output.

Large parts of the platinum and gold mining sectors have been brought to a standstill by wildcat strikes that started in early August and intensified after the police killing of 34 strikers at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine on August 16.

However, a nearly three-week trucker strike that hit fuel supplies to major cities and some factory production came to an end on Friday when workers and freight bosses agreed a three-year wage settlement.

The bond market was closed when the S&P statement landed, but is likely to take a dive when it reopens on Monday.

South African domestic debt has been heavily supported this year by its inclusion from October 1 in Citi's influential World Government Bond Index (WGBI), a benchmark tracked by billions of dollars globally.

Analysts said the WGBI membership was not at stake.

"Although the rand has understandably reacted negatively to the news, this does not impact on South Africa's WGBI eligibility," said Razia Khan, head of Africa research at Standard Chartered in London.

"That would require the country's rating to be cut to below investment grade by at least two separate ratings agencies, which would imply a further two notch downgrade by S&P, and three notch downgrades by Moody's and Fitch."

Galileo: Europe's Version of GPS Reaches Key Phase

another random user sends this quote from the BBC:
"The third and fourth spacecraft in Europe's satellite navigation system have gone into orbit. The pair were launched on a Russian Soyuz rocket from French Guiana. It is an important milestone for the multi-billion-euro project to create a European version of the U.S. Global Positioning System. With four satellites now in orbit ? the first and second spacecraft were launched in 2011 ? it becomes possible to test Galileo end-to-end. That is because a minimum of four satellites are required in the sky for a smartphone or vehicle to use their signals to calculate a positional fix."

Spain, Germany, England find scoring form

By STEVE DOUGLAS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:55 a.m. ET Oct. 13, 2012

LONDON (AP) - World and European champion Spain romped to a 24th straight qualifying win on Friday, although no one in the country was able to see it.

Pedro Rodriguez scored a hat trick as the world's best team routed host Belarus 4-0 in one of a group of big wins for Europe's leading nations in 2014 World Cup qualifying.

Yet, celebrations were muted in the debt-ridden country after no broadcaster paid to televise the national team's match for the first time in 29 years.

Spain's wasn't the most convincing win of the third round of regional qualifiers, with Germany handing Ireland its worst loss since 1971, 6-1 at Dublin.

Wayne Rooney celebrated being handed the temporary England captaincy by scoring twice in a routine 5-0 win over San Marino, taking his goal total in international matches to 31, fifth on the country's all-time list.

But Italy was again unconvincing in beating Armenia 3-1, and the Netherlands managed only a comfortable 3-0 win over Andorra, which is 201st in the rankings.

However, Euro 2012 semifinalist Portugal, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, couldn't make the most of its dominance against Russia and lost 1-0 in a match between the top two teams in Group F.

The Portuguese are three points behind Russia, which is unbeaten under new coach Fabio Capello and has three straight wins in qualifying.

Also, Belgium enhanced its burgeoning reputation as a growing force in Europe with a 3-0 win in Serbia, which lost a home World Cup qualifier for the first time in more than 10 years.

Sweden and the Czech Republic needed second-half rallies to avoid draws against weak competition, beating Faeroe Islands 2-1 and Malta 3-1, respectively.

The victory for the Swedes left them second in Group C, three points behind Germany ahead of their meeting in Berlin on Tuesday.

The third straight qualifying victory for Germany was launched by Marco Reus' goals in the 32nd and 40th minutes before Mesut Oezil's penalty kick and goals by Miroslav Klose and Toni Kroos (two) turned it into a rout.

Spain warmed up for its Group I match against France, which surprisingly lost 1-0 at home to Japan in a friendly on Friday, by stretching its winning run in qualifying that dates back to September 2007.

Pedro set up Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba for the opener before scoring the remaining three goals himself in Minsk, putting Spain ahead of France on goal difference. Both countries have six points and only one team qualifies automatically from each group.

Spain, seeking an unprecedented fourth straight major international tournament trophy, is enjoying a golden era in its soccer history, but that still didn't persuade broadcasters to pay for coverage.

The blackout came after the producer, Sport Five, failed to reach a deal with any Spanish television channel. This was the first time a Spain match was not broadcast at home since 1983, when the team visited Malta.

Rooney was playing for England for the first time since Euro 2012 and was given the captain's role with Steven Gerrard suspended and Frank Lampard sidelined with injury. Rooney marked the occasion by joining Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck in scoring twice at Wembley Stadium.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also scored for the hosts, who moved to the top of Group H.

It wasn't such a good night for Oxlade-Chamberlain's Arsenal teammate, Theo Walcott, who will spend the night in a hospital after colliding with goalkeeper Aldo Junior Simoncini early in the game.

Russia's winner against Portugal came with its only shot on goal in the first half, Alexander Kerzhakov scoring in the sixth minute.

Ronaldo, who has scored six times in his last three Spanish league games for Real Madrid, barely had a sniff in Moscow.

"Maybe we weren't as calm as we usually are," said Portugal coach Paulo Bento, whose team is the only leading European nation not to be atop its group at this stage.

Eddie Johnson scored two goals for the United States, including the winner in second-half injury time, in a 2-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda. The road win put the Americans in position to advance to CONCACAF's final qualifying round if they draw with Guatemala on Tuesday night in Kansas City, Kan.

Guatemala beat Jamaica 2-1 on Friday night.

In Group B, Mexico was held scoreless for more than an hour and 15 minutes by Guyana, but wound up winning 5-0 to stay perfect. Costa Rica held onto second place in the group by winning 1-0 at El Salvador.

Canada beat undermanned Cuba 3-0 in Group C. The Cubans had only 11 players for the game, and finished with 10 after striker Roberto Linares was ejected for a challenge that crumpled captain Kevin McKenna. Four players left the team in Toronto.

In the other Group C game, Honduras and Panama tied 0-0.

In South American qualifying, host Argentina took the overall lead with 17 points as Lionel Messi scored two second-half goals and Sergio Aguero added another. Messi scored in the 66th and added another with a free kick in the 80th while Aguero scored in the 75th.

Alejandro Chumacero scored in the second half to lift host Bolivia into a 1-1 draw with Peru, while Colombia beat Paraguay 2-0.

Radamel Falcao scored two second-half goals as Colombia improved to 16 points in eight matches - among the leaders in qualifying - and left Paraguay with only four points from five matches, the worst record among the nine teams.

Felipe Caicedo scored twice as Ecuador defeated Chile 3-1 in Quito. Ecuador improved to 16 points, Chile has 12.

Honorably discharged and returning to work? - Business ...

If an employee who is also in the military is called to active duty, is released with an honorable discharge and asks to return to his old job, you cannot place any extraneous conditions on his return. You can?t ask for a medical examination or delve into the details of his military service. Upon presentation of discharge papers showing an honorable discharge, you must reinstate him?or face litigation.

Recent case: Brian worked as a police officer and was a member of the Army Reserve. He was called up for service in Operation Iraqi Freedom and told the police department he would be deployed to Kuwait.

While on active duty, Brian apparently engaged in a little home brewing and was accused of furnishing alcohol to enlisted personnel. He faced a court martial, but was allowed to resign his commission in lieu of trial. He received an honorable discharge.

Brian provided a copy of his military discharge to his employer, which demanded that he undergo the return-to-work process other employees on extended leave had to complete. That included drug screening and a personal history questionnaire that asked about any criminal charges occurring during the absence. That?s when Brian?s court martial charges came to light.

When he wasn?t immediately reinstated, he sued under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.

The 6th Circuit concluded Brian should have been immediately reinstated without any preconditions and upheld a monetary award of over $290,000. (Petty v. Metropolitan Government of Nashville-Davidson County, No. 10-6013, 6th Cir., 2012)

Pat Fry insists Ferrari need to keep on working hard ? Formula 1 news

Ferrari technical director, Pat Fry has said that they earnestly need to keep on pushing hard to make the essential developments in their car so as to maintain the lead of their driver, Fernando Alonso in the drivers? championship.

The Scarlet team struggled throughout the pre-season testing programme this year and failed to develop a competent car as compared to their opponents. Moreover, Fry also ruled out the probability of a podium finish in the season opener and expected to face difficulties in the opening few grands prix.

Nonetheless, Alonso has performed tremendously well in the season so far even with the uncompetitive car and has impressed everyone with his incredible driving skills. Furthermore, he is presently leading the drivers? rankings with 194 points.

Even though, he has lost some crucial points in the championship fight due to his retirement in the Japanese Grand Prix held at Suzuka. Nevertheless, he is not feeling disappointed and is targeting to come up stronger in the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, Fry has said that they are aiming to make some substantial advancement in their car and are aiming close the gap to their major rival, McLaren in the upcoming races.

?Our race pace was a little better than in qualifying in Japan, where we were unfortunate with Fernando and the yellow flags,? Fry told Ferrari's website. ?We are currently closer to McLaren but there's still a gap to Red Bull, so we need to keep working on car development.?

In addition, he said that they are trying their best to resolve the issues which they faced in the previous few races and are planning to show up stronger in the approaching races. Besides, he said that they are feeling confident about the Korean GP.

?I think looking back at recent races, we have been bringing small updates to every race, even if we made a few small errors in Singapore, but we worked out what they were and sorted them out in time for Japan,? he added.

It will be interesting to see how the Italian team performs in the remaining races of the current season.

Personally, President Friday was a mentor and role model to me throughout my career, and I am privileged to have followed in his footsteps as President of the University of North Carolina.? He quite literally set the national gold standard for university leadership, and it?s safe to say that no one will ever be more respected or influential in American higher education.?

- UNC System President Tom Ross

?North Carolina has lost one of its most remarkable citizens in Bill Friday. His influence on public higher education in our state and across the nation is legendary. In a lifetime devoted to public service, Bill Friday was committed to providing access to high-quality, affordable higher education to North Carolina students. He was tireless in his efforts to underscore the importance of higher education to people from all walks of life, as well as to our state?s future prosperity.?

- UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Holden Thorp

?Today, North Carolina lost one of our greatest leaders and advocates. A true public servant, Bill Friday helped shape North Carolina into the 21st century economic engine it is today. He grew the University of North Carolina system into the best higher education system in the country. He helped make Research Triangle Park a world-renowned center for innovation and entrepreneurship. And he advocated tirelessly to ensure that a college education was within reach for all North Carolina students.

?Most importantly, Bill Friday loved the people of North Carolina. That love was evident in his work for our state, as well as his weekly talk show where, for three decades, he welcomed the writers, thinkers, educators and others who were working to make a difference for North Carolina. Bill Friday was inspired by the citizens of our state, and inspired so many of us in return. He embodied the best of North Carolina, and his legacy will continue to live on in the many lives he touched.?

? U.S. Senator Kay Hagan

?Bill Friday transformed education in our state and opened opportunities for millions of North Carolinians. Just this week as our System began its 50th Anniversary recognition, I noted how it was UNC System President Bill Friday along with State Education Board Chairman, Dr. Dallas Herring, who together sat on a floor in Raleigh with a state map to draw the initial circles of where new community colleges should be located. Bill Friday was my personal hero and my mentor. I will miss him greatly.?

- NC Community College System President Scott Ralls

?Bill Friday was a North Carolina treasure.? He led by inspiration and example?with dignity, compassion and humility?through over five decades of public service.? His legacy is a stronger state with a superb university system, a richer public life, a more vibrant culture and a diverse and resilient economy.? Bill was instrumental in giving the gift of education to hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians?citizens who went out and served our state and nation in countless ways.? As a product of the University of North Carolina, I too owe him my gratitude for an educational experience that broadened my horizons and set me on my life?s course.? Bill continued his work for decades in what no one could really call ?retirement? with his public television show, North Carolina People. Like many North Carolinians, Lisa and I looked forward to inviting him into our home every week to see where he and his guests would lead us.? In this and many other ways, we will treasure his memory and miss him greatly.?

- Representative David Price (NC-04)

Use LinkBuster to parse short URLs (Android app review)

LinkBuster

A couple weeks back I delicately expressed my concern about clicking shortened URLs on our Android phones. If you weren't paying attention, there's a nasty bug in some Samsung phones that can delete all user data if you click a malicious link -- one that's easily hidden behind a URL shortener like bit.ly or goo.gl. I promised to make someone famous if they would create a great solution for all of us on Android.

Quite a few folks sent apps in, and while all of them worked as intended, I have to give the hat tip to JP2014 for the LinkBuster app. It does two things I'm crazy about -- uses Android intents, and incorporates the Web of Trust service.

Using it is really easy. Install it from Google Play using the link above, and any time you click a URL you get the choice to open it in LinkBuster. If it's a link you trust, just choose your browser. But if it's a link that looks sketchy, or is shortened and you have no idea where it will take you, choose LinkBuster from the menu provided.

One the LinkBuster app is opened, you get the full version of the URL as well as the Web of Trust rating for it. The Web of Trust is crowd sourced data from folks like you and me, and it's usually spot-on about the safety and validity of links. Cory turned me on to it last year, and I think it's a great tool. Having it incorporated this way is perfect -- you use it when you have reason to question a link, and the rest of the time it's out of the way.

The web is a nasty place. Plenty of folks want to make things miserable for others, and we have to be on guard against it. Tools like LinkBuster can help. It's free, so give it a try!

Sports-related concussions and traumatic brain injuries: Research ...

Concussion_Wikipedia

In recent years, the issue of concussions has come to the fore in media coverage of American sports. Though the early media focus was on professional football, the issue is being highlighted at nearly every level of sport now.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. emergency departments annually treat an average of 173,285 sports- and recreation-related traumatic brain injuries among children and adolescents. Such emergency visits have increased 60% over the past decade; in 2009 alone, there were 248,418 such cases.

Among the pioneers of reporting in this field, Alan Schwarz of the New York Times highlighted the history of concussions and their consequences in the National Football League. Former NFL players now continue to pursue legal action and raise awareness of the issue. The National Hockey League has more recently experienced its own crisis of conscience, as Sidney Crosby, one of the league?s best players, went down for the better part of a year, beginning in 2010.

The stories of other prominent players continue to draw attention to concussions and their impacts. In Major League Baseball, concussions are known to have helped end the careers of Mike Matheny (now the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals) and Corey Koskie, and they cost Minnesota Twins star Justin Morneau the better part of a season of play. During the National Basketball Association 2012 Finals, Oklahoma City star James Harden received a concussion just before the beginning of the playoffs, as his team was contending for a league championship.

Moreover, the attention paid to concussions has led to rules changes within professional leagues, as Major League Baseball has instituted a disabled list for players with concussions, and the NFL has banned certain types of hits as well as aggressively prosecuted the usage of ?bounty pools,? where players receive bonuses for injuring players on the opposing team.

This recent attention at the top levels of sport has also helped spotlight the fact that concussion risk starts at the youth level in all these sports and more, including soccer, boxing, gymnastics, horseback riding, skiing, and cycling. The long-term effects of head injury are only partially understood and are still being studied across all sports and development levels. The Boston University Center for Traumatic Enchephalopathy continues to examine the brains of deceased athletes in order to research and compile case studies on the long-term effects of concussions; the Center also continues to conduct other inquiries and publish academic studies in this evolving field.

Below are studies and articles that bring a research perspective to questions around concussions in sports:

_____

?Sports-Related Head Injury?

American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Patient Information Report, December 2011.

Excerpt: ?A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is defined as a blow or jolt to the head, or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue. Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate or severe, depending on the extent of damage to the brain. Mild cases may result in a brief change in mental state or consciousness, while severe cases may result in extended periods of unconsciousness, coma or even death.?

?

?Epidemiology of Concussions among United States High school Athletes in 20 Sports?

Marar, M; McIlvain, NM; Fields, SK; Comstock, RD. American Journal of Sports Medicine, 2012.

Excerpt: ?During the study period, 1936 concussions were reported during 7,780,064 athlete-exposures (AEs) for an overall injury rate of 2.5 per 10,000 AEs. The injury rate was higher in competition (6.4) than practice (1.1) ? The majority of concussions resulted from participation in football (47.1%, n = 912), followed by girls? soccer (8.2%, n = 159), boys? wrestling (5.8%, n = 112), and girls? basketball (5.5%, n = 107). Football had the highest concussion rate (6.4), followed by boys? ice hockey (5.4) and boys? lacrosse (4.0)?. In gender-comparable sports, girls had a higher concussion rate (1.7) than boys (1.0)?. The most common mechanisms of injury were player-player contact (70.3%) and player-playing surface contact (17.2%). In more than 40% of athletes in sports other than girls? swimming and girls? track, concussion symptoms resolved in 3 days or less. Athletes most commonly returned to play in 1 to 3 weeks (55.3%), with 22.8% returning in less than 1 week and 2.0% returning in less than 1 day?. Although interest in sports-related concussions is usually focused on full-contact sports like football and ice hockey, concussions occur across a wide variety of high school sports. Concussion rates vary by sport, gender, and type of exposure. An understanding of concussion rates, patterns of injury, and risk factors can drive targeted preventive measures and help reduce the risk for concussion among high school athletes in all sports.?

?

?Functionally-Detected Cognitive Impairment in High School Football Players Without Clinically Diagnosed Concussion?

Talavage, TM, et al. Journal of Neurotrama, 2011.

Findings: Overall, the data suggest ?the presence of a previously unknown, but suspected ? group of athletes exhibiting neurocognitive deficits that persist over time, but which does not present observable symptoms.? The study?s authors say the findings indicate current on-field tests for concussions may not be sufficient in determining full risks to the brain.?

?

?Clinical Report?Sport-Related Concussion in Children and Adolescents?

Halstead, Mark E; Walter, Kevin D. American Academy of Pediatrics, 2010.

Excerpt: ?Sport-related concussion is a ?hot topic? in the media and in medicine. It is a common injury that is likely underreported by pediatric and adolescent athletes. Football has the highest incidence of concussion, but girls have higher concussion rates than boys do in similar sports. A clear understanding of the de?nition, signs, and symptoms of concussion is necessary to recognize it and rule out more severe intracranial injury? This report serves as a basis for understanding the diagnosis and management of concussion in children and adolescent athletes. ?

?

?Response to Acute Concussive Injury in Soccer Players: Is Gender a Modifying Factor??

Zuckerman, SL, et al. Journal of Neurosurgery Pediatrics, October 2012.

Abstract: ?Several studies have suggested a gender difference in response to sports-related concussion (SRC). The Concussion in Sport group did not include gender as a modifying factor in SRC, concluding that the evidence at that point was equivocal. In the present study the authors endeavored to assess acute neurocognitive and symptom responses to an SRC in equivalent cohorts of male and female soccer players. The authors hypothesized that female athletes would experience greater levels of acute symptoms and neurocognitive impairment than males?. The results failed to replicate prior findings of gender specific baseline neurocognitive differences in verbal and visual memory. The findings also indicated no differential gender based acute response to concussion (symptoms or neurocognitive scores) among high school soccer players. The implications of these findings for the inclusion of gender as a modifying factor in this tightly matched cohort are addressed.?

?

?Nonfatal Traumatic Brain Injuries Related to Sports and Recreation Activities Among Persons Aged ?19 Years?United States, 2001-2009?

Gilchrist, Julie, et al. CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, 2011.

Excerpt: ?From 2001 to 2009, the number of annual TBI-related ED visits [Traumatic Brain Injury-related Emergency Department visits] increased significantly, from 153,375 to 248,418, with the highest rates among males aged 10?19 years. By increasing awareness of TBI risks from sports and recreation, employing proper technique and protective equipment, and quickly responding to injuries, the incidence, severity, and long-term negative health effects of TBIs among children and adolescents can be reduced.?

?

?Assessment and Management of Sport-Related Concussions in United States High Schools?

Meehan, William P, et al. American Journal of Sports Medicine, 2011.

Excerpt: ?Concussions account for nearly 15% of all sport-related injuries in high school athletes. The timing of return to play after a sport-related concussion is similar regardless of whether the decision to return the athlete to play is made by a physician or an AT. When a medical doctor is involved, most concussions are assessed by primary care physicians as opposed to subspecialists. Computed tomography is obtained during the assessment of 1 of every 5 concussions occurring in high school athletes.?

?

?Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport?

McCrory, P, et al. Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2009.

Excerpt: ?This document is developed for use by physicians, therapists, certi?ed athletic trainers, health professionals, coaches and other people involved in the care of injured athletes, whether at the recreational, elite or professional level. While agreement exists pertaining to principal messages conveyed within this document, the authors acknowledge that the science of concussion is evolving and therefore management and return to play (RTP) decisions remain in the realm of clinical judgment on an individualized basis.?

?

?Catastrophic Sports Injury Research Twenty-Ninth Annual Report Fall 1982 ? Spring 2011? (PDF)

Mueller, Frederick O; Cantu, Robert C. Department of Exercise & Sport Science, University of North Carolina, 2011.

Description: ?The National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research collects and disseminates death and permanent disability sports injury data that involve brain and/or spinal cord injuries. The research is funded by a grant from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the American Football Coaches Association, and the National Federation of State High School Associations. This research has been conducted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1965. Each year three annual reports are compiled.?

?

?Management of the Athlete with Concussion?

Su, John K; Ramirez, Joel F. The Permanente Journal, 2012.

Excerpt: ?The approach to and management of the athlete with concussion can be a challenging endeavor to physicians who care for athletes who have suffered a head injury?this group includes family physicians, pediatricians, internists, emergency medicine physicians, primary sports medicine physicians, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, and neurosurgeons. Sometimes questions regarding the need for neurologic, psychological, or radiographic imaging can make the decision for return to play unclear. New legislation will undoubtedly increase physician visits for these athletes to return to play. Thus, the goal of this article is to review the latest guidelines regarding concussion management to help all physicians who care for athletes do so appropriately.?

?

?Hockey Concussion: Is It Child Abuse??

Hemond, Chris. Canadian Medical Association Journal, 2012.

Excerpt: ?If not a stampede, it appears there is at least a slow shuffle of Canadian youngsters out of contact hockey as a result of widespread publicity about the parade of National Hockey League (NHL) superstars onto injured reserve lists. Meanwhile, one critic says Hockey Canada?s failure to implement even more stringent anti-concussion measures constitutes nothing short of ?child abuse.??

?

?Effect of Bodychecking on Rate of Injuries Among Minor Hockey Players?

Cusimano, Michael D, et al. Open Medicine, 2011.

Excerpt: ?Bodychecking is a leading cause of injury among minor hockey players. Its value has been the subject of heated debate since Hockey Canada introduced bodychecking for competitive players as young as 9 years in the 1998/1999 season?. In this study, the odds of injury increased with decreasing age of exposure to bodychecking. These findings add to the growing evidence that bodychecking holds greater risk than benefit for youth and support widespread calls to ban this practice.?

UK insurers say court decision saves $480 million

LONDON (Reuters) - British insurers on Wednesday welcomed a court decision on the timing of a planned increase in personal injury awards, saying it would save them 300 million pounds.

The Court of Appeal ruling means the increase in court awards for personal injury will apply only to new claims that are made after April 1 2013, and not to older claims that are settled beyond that date.

The increase in awards was recommended last year as part of an overhaul of Britain's personal injury compensation system which also banned "no win, no fee" lawyers from paying referral fees for accident victims' details.

The decision is a boost to Direct Line, as the Royal Bank of Scotland-owned insurer battles to attract buyers to its listing on the London stock market.

It had warned it could face a hit of up to 45 million pounds if the ruling had gone the other way.

"Today's decision by the Court of Appeal means that insurers will not be forced to pass on about 300 million pounds in increased costs to the premium paying public," said James Dalton, assistant director of motor and liability at the Association of British Insurers.

"We have won a battle against unnecessary costs, but not the war."

Direct Line, Britain's biggest motor insurer, on Tuesday narrowed the indicative price of its shares to between 170 pence and 177.5 pence, in the lower half its initial range.

The share offering looks set to be London's biggest in over a year, despite investor caution over stiff competition and increased regulatory scrutiny in the motor insurance industry.

49ers set franchise yards record, beat Bills 45-3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Joe Montana never did it. Neither did Steve Young or Y.A. Tittle. Even the architect of the West Coast offense, Bill Walsh, could only imagine such a massive mark.

Of all the Hall of Fame quarterbacks and coaches in the history of the San Francisco 49ers, leave it to Alex Smith and Jim Harbaugh to set a new standard.

Smith threw for a season-high 303 yards and three touchdowns, Frank Gore ran for 106 yards and a score, and the 49ers amassed a franchise-record 621 yards in blowing by the Buffalo Bills 45-3 on Sunday.

San Francisco also became the first team in NFL history with 300 yards passing and 300 yards rushing.

"Very cool," Smith said. "When you think of the 49ers, you think of great offense."

Michael Crabtree (seven catches for 113 yards) and Vernon Davis (seven catches for 106 yards) each eclipsed the century mark to pull San Francisco (4-1) into a tie with Arizona for the NFC West lead. Even Randy Moss, rarely targeted in his comeback, caught a pass for 11 yards.

Smith, the 2005 No. 1 overall pick out of Utah, threw TD passes of 43, 28 and 10 yards and surpassed 300 yards passing for only the third time in his career ? and first in a victory. The last time came when he had 309 yards in a loss at Philadelphia two years ago ? "a completely different world," he said ? in former coach Mike Singletary's final season.

"Quarterback was near perfect," Harbaugh said.

The Bills again found themselves on the wrong side of a 49ers record ? and quite a few others, too.

Rian Lindell kicked a 31-yard field goal in the first quarter before the 49ers scored the final 42 points to hand Buffalo (2-3) its second straight embarrassing loss. San Francisco's previous best was 598 yards in a 34-31 loss to the Bills on Sept. 13, 1992, which also was Buffalo's worst.

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 126 yards and an interception, and the Bills rushed for only 89 yards, most with the game well out of hand once again.

"They flat-out dominated the game from end to end," Fitzpatrick said. "We just got beat bad by a better team today. There was no fancy stuff. They are who they are and they just played better."

Far better.

The Bills allowed 45 second-half points and 580 total yards in a humiliating 52-28 home loss to New England last week. Beginning a two-week road trip, Buffalo's baggage also traveled to the West Coast.

Since taking a 21-7 lead against the Patriots, Buffalo has been outscored 90-10. The Patriots and 49ers combined to gain 1,201 yards. And with the 49ers shredding the New York Jets last week, they've outscored opponents 79-3 in their last two games.

The Bills became the first team to give up at least 550 yards in consecutive games in the same season since the 1950 New York Yanks.

"I have no answers and no excuses," beleaguered Bills coach Chan Gailey said. "I don't have the answers and I have to find the answers. That's my job."

With the Bills unable to slow anybody down on defense, San Francisco abandoned its usually conservative game plan to deliver a scintillating show in the air.

Smith, who sprained his middle finger in the fourth quarter, completed 18 of 24 passes. He also had a perfect 158.3 passer rating in the first half, when he threw for 237 yards ? a career best for a half.

The longest completion Smith had in the first four weeks was for 29 yards. In the first half alone, he completed a 53-yarder to Davis that set up a field goal by David Akers, a 43-yard touchdown to Kyle Williams and hooked up with Crabtree for 36 yards.

Williams took the back-shoulder pass from Smith, spun away from a defender and ran the final 10 yards free into the end zone. Williams fell to his knees, raised his arms and nodded to the sun-splashed crowd at Candlestick Park after giving the 49ers a 10-3 lead.

Every time the Bills blew an opportunity ? and they blew plenty ? the 49ers capitalized.

Backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who ran for 39 yards on four carries, fumbled on an end-around and Buffalo took over at its own 17. Two plays later, Patrick Willis stripped Scott Chandler, San Francisco recovered and Smith floated a 28-yard touchdown to Crabtree to put the 49ers in front 17-3 with 24 seconds to go before the half.

"Everything about today was just amazing," Crabtree said.

A holding penalty on Buffalo's Jairus Byrd wiped out a punt return Leodis McKelvin took for a touchdown in the first quarter. The offense failed to score any points after McKelvin returned a kickoff 59 yards. And after a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took nearly 6 minutes stalled in the second quarter, Lindell kicked a field goal for Buffalo's only score.

Smith led another touchdown drive that featured Kaepernick gaining 15 yards on a sweep and ended one play later when Gore dove over the pile for a TD that extended San Francisco's lead to 24-3.

Chris Culliver intercepted an underthrown pass by Fitzpatrick just shy of the goal line to end Buffalo's best chance to reach the end zone all afternoon.

Smith also tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Mario Manningham, Kaepernick ran 16 yards for a score and Anthony Dixon added a 3-yard run for the final touchdown.

"I'm not a big statistical guy, don't get caught up in it," 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman said. "But at the same time, just in the normal course of events to be able to throw up that kind of production, obviously we're doing something right."

NOTES: Buffalo allowed 500 yards in consecutive games for the first time in franchise history. ... Bills DE Mario Williams wore a small stabilizer on his left wrist instead of the brace he had the first four weeks. He appeared to grimace after a few plays. "It's good one day, and bad the next day," said Williams, who had two tackles and no sacks. ... Byrd injured a chest muscle, and Bills OL Chad Rinehart hurt his calf in the second half and did not return. Both are day to day.
