Dempsey calls?move 'dream come true'

LONDON (AP) - U.S. soccer star Clint Dempsey is moving from Fulham to Tottenham, and national team captain Carlos Bocanegra was loaned from Glasgow Rangers to Racing Santander through the end of the season.

Dempsey was transferred Friday for a reported $9.5 million. The 29-year-old midfielder and forward a team-high 23 goals last season, including 17 in the Premier League, and had 60 goals in 5 1/2 seasons with Fulham.

Dempsey had refused to play for Fulham this season ahead of a widely expected move to Liverpool. After negotiations between Fulham and Liverpool foundered, he was able to secure a move across town to Spurs.

"Clint was a very influential player for Fulham over a number of seasons and the club thanks him for his contribution and wishes him well for the future," Fulham said.

Dempsey said he was excited to play for new Spurs manager Andre Vilas-Boas.

"To play under this head coach and play for this club is a dream come true. I want to make the most of it," Dempsey said on Tottenham's Twitter feed. "There are a lot of great players here, I'm looking forward to training and playing with them."

Dempsey said he had no ill will toward the Cottagers.

"A lot was said and written ahead of me leaving Fulham," Dempsey said. "It wasn't how it was portrayed, but that's in the past now and we move on. I want to thank the fans for everything, some of the best memories I've had in football, and thank the chairman for giving me the opportunity to come from the MLS and compete over here."

Tottenham also signed French national team goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from Lyon for $12.6 million, which means American Brad Friedel is likely to lose his starting job.

Bocanegra, a defender, left Rangers along with American midfielder Maurice Edu, who transferred to Stoke, where he will join countryman Geoff Cameron. American Alejando Bedoya also has left Rangers for Helsingborg since the club filed for bankruptcy and was demoted to Scotland's fourth tier.

Racing Santander is in Spain's second division.

"I'm excited to be able to get the opportunity to play in Spain," Bocanegra told Sky Sports News. "I'm also excited that's it's a loan, because I can come back. I enjoy it here. It's football and these things happen. I got to get on with it."

In other deals involving U.S. players, defender Oguchi Onyewu was loaned from Sporting Lisbon to Malaga, and forward Joe Gyau was sent from Hoffenheim to St. Pauli on a loan. Malaga is in this season's Champions League.

Elsewhere, English champion Manchester City was busy on a relatively quiet deadline day.

City, which has been quiet in the transfer market this summer by its standards, acted late to sign Brazil right back Maicon from Inter Milan, highly rated winger Scott Sinclair from Swansea and Serbia defender Matija Nastasic from Fiorentina.

In return, manager Roberto Mancini sold Netherlands holding midfielder Nigel de Jong to AC Milan and moved striker Roque Santa Cruz to Spanish team Malaga on a season-long loan.

Manchester United sold Dimitar Berbatov to Fulham, and Rafael van der Vaart left Tottenham to rejoin Hamburg.

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton joined French league leader Marseille in a one-year loan deal that had been widely expected for several days.

Real Madrid and Barcelona had long tied up their main transfer dealings for the summer, although Barca sent Dutch winger Ibrahim Afellay to Schalke, and Madrid signed Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien on a season-long loan.

In Italy, the window closed after Denmark forward Nicklas Bendtner was loaned from Arsenal to champion Juventus, with a view to a permanent move at the end of the season, and free-agent Luca Toni rejoined Fiorentina just before the deadline.

Why the Tech World May See An Influx of Troops

The modern military is, more than ever, a realm where technology and computer data are utilized in an ultra-fast paced environment where lives are on the line. The men and women charged with handling intel and state of the art gear are coming off the lines, back to a civilian world where the same talents they used while serving their country could benefit them in the potentially lucrative and ever-growing technology space. One entrepreneur in New York is taking steps to help troops hone their skills to be successful among coders and developers.

Brittany Laughlin, 27, is the CEO of a New York-based company called Incline. The company?s mission? To support returning soldiers get the experience and skills they need to carve out careers in technology and engineering. The program puts veterans through a six-week course ? five days a week of intensive training in web app development ? and then works to place program graduates in junior developer positions in technology companies, according to the company.

Potential candidates for a full scholarship to the program include troops that have previous engineering, mathematics or computer programming experience. Incline is also a portal for employers to find participating veterans interested in programming positions.

Laughlin?s experience as a ?Navy Brat? led her to the idea to start a company that could be of service to returning soldiers. Her grandfather, father and brother all served in that branch of the armed forces.

Incline seems exist in that space of business where everyone can win and Laughlin should be commended for her efforts to bring opportunity to those who?ve bravely served their country. That said, this is not a charity or a non-profit, rather an educational program within a specific niche, giving a crash course to talented personnel who, in many cases, already possess the basic skills to break into the tech sphere.

According to Incline, there are about 220,000 troops returned from overseas battlefields with another 1,000,000 scheduled to return?over the next several years, so the program could see an uptick in participation, if it proves to be a worthwhile educational experience and does indeed teach useable skills.

Technology hubs such as Silicon Valley, Austin, New York, Los Angeles and others could benefit from such an influx of talent. Undoubtedly there are some uber-ambitious startup minds among them with compelling products capable of gaining traction, earning revenue and capturing the imaginations of consumers.

If you can't quite scrounge up the $200 it takes to buy a quality 7-inch slab these days, Amazon may have a solution for you: sell them your attention. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company plans to develop a ad-supported tablet that would display advertisements whenever the screen is turned on. Sound familiar? Like the ad-supported Kindle readers Amazon's already dabbled with, subsided tablets would ring in at a lower price tag then their ad-free counterparts. WSJ sources also mentioned that some versions of the device would be WiFi only, potentially lowering the price even further. No word yet, if you'll be able to buy yourself out of the ads later, of course.

Update: Care for a thicker plot? CNET is now reporting that Amazon will reveal two new Kindle Fire tablets next week -- an all new 7-inch wonder and a slightly reworked version of the original. While a brand new slab could be an obvious contender for the 7-inch tablet crown, a refreshed version of Amazon's original hardware could very well fit the ad-supported bill. Roll over Beethoven, make room Mozart.? The Kia hamsters are back and they?re turning a serious, 17th Century ballet into a wild, 21st Century electronic dance party in their newest ad campaign for the popular Kia Soul.

Few official spokes?er?rodents have clicked with the car buying community as effectively as what the Korean carmaker likes to call its ?hamstars.?? And their previous commercials have generated tens of millions of views on Youtube.com and elsewhere as they have gone viral like few other automotive ads.

The latest spot will make its debut today on 18,000 movie screens across the U.S. and then appear on the MTV Video Music Awards on September 6th.

In typically irreverent fashion, the newest campaign has been titled ?Bringing Down the House,? and is set in an 18th Century European opera house.? Set to the Axwell remix, ?In My Mind,? it shakes up the staid surroundings by turning them into a very 21st Century electronic dance party.

They're back. And this time they've gone way back in their time-traveling Kia Soul.

Considering their success ? and perhaps helping build their popularity ? Kia has made surprisingly judicious use of the hamsters.? They made their first appearance to assist with the launch of the Soul, an ?urban passenger vehicle,? three years ago.
